Career Advising for Medical Students
Career development at the Schmidt College of Medicine is supported through a comprehensive, interconnected advising ecosystem that blends digital resources, faculty mentorship, and community-based support. At the center of this system is the MedOwls Navigating and Exploring Specialties and Transitions (N.E.S.T) Career Advising Program, which provides specialty exploration and transition-focused programming across all four years. N.E.S.T. hosts sessions designed to help students understand specialty pathways, prepare for key academic and professional milestones, and make informed decisions about their future careers. N.E.S.T. is led by the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs in the COM Office of Student Affairs and supported by career advisors who provide individualized counseling and facilitate group sessions throughout all four years.
N.E.S.T. is complemented by Career Corner, the MedOwls Network hub where students can access workshops, advising sessions, mentoring programs, essential documents, and tailored subgroups designed to meet the needs of learners from Year 1 through Year 4. Career Corner makes it easy for students to sign up for career advisor office hours, stay informed about key events such as Visioning Night and Mock Interview Day, and connect with alumni mentors who offer guidance on specialty exploration and residency preparation.
Together, these efforts create a unified, student-centered advising structure that supports academic success and confident career decision-making throughout medical school.Ìý
