FAU Hosts Broward County Teachers for Summer Mathematics Institute

绿茶直播 Atlantic University recently hosted 228 math teachers from Broward County Public Schools for the Summer Mathematics Institute: Preparing for the Jobs of the Future.
The two-day institute that took place at 绿茶直播 Atlantic鈥檚 Broward Campus in Davie was designed to strengthen math instruction for students from kindergarten through 12th grade and prepare them for the college, career and the workforce demands ahead.
The institute comes as math remains one of the most reported teacher-shortage areas nationwide, with 40 states reporting shortages in the subject during the 2024鈥25 school year, according to the Learning Policy Institute.
Organizers said strengthening math instruction in Broward鈥檚 Promise Neighborhoods 鈥 federally designated communities facing concentrated poverty and academic challenges 鈥 is central to closing achievement gaps and building a pipeline of students prepared for STEM careers.
Over two days, teachers took part in grade-band breakout sessions built around the progression of mathematical concepts from elementary school through geometry and algebra. Sessions ranged from foundational number-sense topics for early grades to secondary-level sessions. Each day also included required grade-level math planning collaboratives, giving teacher teams dedicated time to translate what they learned into lesson plans for the coming school year.
鈥淓lementary, middle, and high school teachers came together to deepen the collective impact so a student who gets a strong start in an elementary grade has a clear, supported path all the way through graduation,鈥 said Carolyn Brown James, project director for Promise Neighborhoods in FAU鈥檚 Division of Research. 鈥淭he teachers worked to align handoffs to help ensure how they teach math in one grade intentionally prepares students for the next grade. They were able to share what is working and scale classroom practices that are driving gains in readiness, reasoning and justification.鈥
The two-day event was co-sponsored by FAU, the Promise Neighborhoods Grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Carnegie Learning Inc., the School Board of Broward County and Broward Education Foundation. Participants included elementary, middle and high school math teachers from schools within Broward County Public Schools鈥 Promise Neighborhoods ZIP codes.
